What If Your Child Wants To Learn Magic?

 In Tips for Learning Magic

There are many different ways for your child to learn magic, and some may be more effective than others. Here are some pros and cons to various methods and my thoughts on each one!

Mentoring From a Magician

I believe having a mentor is the best way for a kid to learn magic, for many reasons! Having another person there to guide and instruct the child directly is very helpful for the learning process. Along with being able to help the child focus on what they’re doing, the ability to have conversations back and forth to ensure the correct technique is a huge help to the learning process. Many magicians with mentoring experience will often provide assignments of what to work on and how often to practice, ensuring that the child knows how to best use their time outside of the teaching environment.

Magic Club Membership

Similar to a one-on-one mentorship, the opportunity to learn from a variety of magicians at a magic club is very valuable. Most magic clubs allow youth to attend their meeting or have another club specifically for kids. The Society of American Magicians, a international group, also runs the Society of Young Magicians (SYM), which offers resources and guidance to kids interested in learning.

Reading Magic Books

If your child learns well by reading, then magic books may be a great option for them! Various magic shops, online stores, bookstores, and public libraries offer magic books that can provide history, instructions, and tips for aspiring magicians. You can learn a large number of tricks from a book in comparison to videos that focus on only one or two tricks. Plus, when learning from a book, you have the opportunity to craft your own personality and stage presence, rather than copying the characteristics of someone teaching via video. Magic books offer a large variety of tricks so your child can decide what kind of magic they enjoy most!

Learning Magic Online

Between Youtube and magicians’ websites, there are many opportunities to learn magic online. Watching another person do something can be a very effective way for some of us to learn. But while there is a world of content out there, it’s important to remember that not every video is going to be the most helpful when learning. As your child explores the various learning opportunities online, start to take note of what kind of videos are best helping them learn so you can filter out ones similar in the future!

These are just a few ideas to consider when your child wants to learn magic! Good luck to you and your child as they embark on this fun journey!
